Module 5 Blog Post

“What source did you review and who created it (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited))?
The source that was reviewed for this modules blog assignment was the required video featuring Wilma Mankiller lecturing at the Heard Museum that could be found in the module 5 section of the course entitled: “M5 Overview” (ASU Libraries) (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited)) (M5 Overview).
“What perspective do you think it is meant to convey? (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited))”
When thinking about the “perspective” that Mrs. Mankiller was trying to bring threw with her lecture at the Heard museum that evening seemed to be of an informative, educational, and inspiring perspective. Not only was Mrs. Mankiller speaking as female Native American, former Chief, and scholar but she was speaking as a human being that has a great breadth and depth when it comes to knowledge regarding Native American culture both past, and present. She had achieved this knowledge by learning as much as she could about Native American Tribes not only threw studying them, but also immersing herself in their lives, and cultures by visiting so many tribes not only in North America but as the video mentioned traveling all over the world to meet, talk with, and learn from all types of tribes (ASU Libraries) (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited)) (M5 Overview)
“Why do you think these web resources were selected and put into this course and not others (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited))?”
It is my thought that the video featuring Mrs. Mankiller speaking at the Heard museum was chosen largely because of her knowledge on the topic of Native American history, culture, civilizations as well as  her commitment to educating, and informing  others either Native Americans, or non-Native Americans  on these same topics. Like she is shown doing during her speech at the Heard    museum (ASU Libraries) (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited)) (M5 Overview).
The video also allowed us to personally listen, learn, and reflect on some of the topics that Mrs. Mankiller addressed in her lecture and let us analyze, and digest the points that she was making. Something that really stood out for me and it was a  Mohawk saying that she liked as well that came at the end of her lecture was: “It’s hard to see the future with tears in your eyes”. A truly wonderful saying that has so many different situations that it could be applied to (ASU Libraries) (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited)) (M5 Overview) .
“What makes a quality academic website and do you think the website you reviewed is one? (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited))”
Yes. The video featuring Mrs. Mankiller should be considered a “quality academic” source as it is not really a website but rather a lecture that Mrs. Mankiller gave at the Heard museum. However as highlighted in the video Mrs. Mankiller is very well educated, and versed in Native American culture, and history and this knowledge came to her by not only being a Native American herself but also former chief, and a scholar in the area of Native American cultures accumulating many different awards, degrees, and honorary degrees in the course of her life time several honorary degrees coming from Ivy league universities such as Yale (ASU Libraries).
Needless to say all of the various degrees, awards, and honorary degrees that Mrs. Mankiller has obtained during her lifetime she is clearly recognized by many as an expert in the field of Native American studies and that is why we feel that this source is of great integrity, and quality (ASU Libraries) (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited)) (M5 Overview).

“What is the purpose of making a Native American focused journal into a blog? (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited))
While not trying to repeat my answer to the next question asked below my thought was that by making an academic journal into a blog allows others outside our class environment interested in Native American studies the opportunity to get a new perspective, or maybe a new idea, or two from reading the blogs that we as a class have posted online.

Why do you think I have encouraged you to share the knowledge you have gained in a more public forum, beyond the virtual classroom? (M5 Academic Journal Blog Academic Journal Blog Goals (Briefly Revisited))
It is of my opinion that the reason that a blog was chosen as part of the course curriculum was with the purpose of allowing students to reach outside the confines of the digital classroom so that we not only as a class but also as individuals can educate ourselves, other classmates, and the general public on the various topics and issues that we have studied during the course by sharing some of what we have learned in the course with others   including our own thoughts, feelings, and opinions, about the various topics that we have blogged about over the time we have spent in the course. With the hope of educating others in the world around us about these same topics whether individuals have a general curiosity regarding Native Americans, and Native American culture or perhaps they have an interest in Native American history either past, or present. Regardless the blog for the course might be able to enlighten them or get them thinking about other points that they would like to explore when it comes to Native Americans.
Hopefully someday in the near future people will just be people who are rated on their accomplishments not their skin color, ethnic, religious or spiritual background, or culture. We will all just be individuals of this wonderful place called earth helping others not hurting others. Because when we stop and reflect life is truly a blessing. It really is the equivalent of winning the lottery to be allowed a chance to occupy and be a part of this earth. So we need to make our time here as productive, peaceful, and pleasant as possible for all individuals that call this planet home.

  1. I was also touched by the Mohawk proverb. I think her speech was very imformative. She made several valid points. I personally found her thoughts on the lack of accurate knowledge of indigneous people to be very true. I know that I learned much more from this class than I ever did through life experience or my education. Good post
