For my post I Chose to write about an exhibit at the National museum of the American lndian. The exhibit was called Patriot Nations :Native Americans in our nation's armed forces.    “Native Americans have participated in every major US military encounter from the  Revolutionary War to today’s conflicts in the middle east Middle East serving at a higher rate in proportion to their population than any other ethnic group”http://nmai.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/item/?id=959
The contributions of Native servicemen and women have been largely forgotten or overlooked. This exhibit is hoping to change that, One slide I found particularly interesting was regarding Lt. Ernest Childers who fought with distinction in world war 2. He would receive the United States highest Military honor, the congressional medal of honor. It is given out for military heroism above and beyond the call of duty. It is truly a great honor.Lt .Childers was from the creek tribe in Oklahoma.  “Ernest Childers received the Medal of Honor for heroic action in 1943 when, up against machine gun fire, he and eight men charged the enemy. Although suffering a broken foot in the assault, Childers ordered covering fire and advanced up the hill, single-handedly killing two snipers, silencing two machine gun nests, and capturing an enemy mortar observer”.www.army.mil
Five Native Americans in total have received the nation's highest military honor for their bravery and service to this country. I never knew the sacrifice that so many native americans have made in serving in the armed forces. It is interesting for as bitter as the indigenous people should be towards the united states government. The Native americans have never failed to answer the call to help protect the United States it's inspiring.

  1. Great post on the participation of the Native American peoples in the armed forces. I appreciated the information in the links you provided. My wife and I visited the Ganondagan site of the Seneca nation yesterday. One of the exhibits there showed various Iroquois who had served in the military. I found one exhibit to have a sense of irony in that one of the Seneca Indian tribe members fought to save the French from destruction by the Germans. The irony was that the French had originally burned their corn fields on their march to fight against this particular village yet now this Native American was fighting to save their freedom. 2. I enjoyed your post, along with all the links. It thought it was was terrible how the Seneca Indian tribe members gave of themselves help fight the battles of the French against the Gemans. The French treated the Seneca Indian members with such disrespect. There was no reason to burn the corn fields down. If anything the French should have genuine friends with the Seneca Indian tribe members since the tribe gave of themselves for batles that were not theirs to fight.
